It seems almost a requirement that every generation find a way to shake up their parents. Whether it was long hair in the '60s or belly button rings today, young people have always come up with something to add a few extra gray hairs to their parents' heads. So how do we respond?

What Does God Say?

Ephesians 6:4 says, "And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord" (NKJV).

  • This verse begins by telling fathers (and this would apply to mothers as well), "Don't make your children angry by the way you treat them." What kind of treatment would make you angry if you were in your child's place?
  • Draw a picture of how you feel toward those who make you angry. You can use symbols, stick figures or any other method that expresses your feelings.
  • With the above caution in mind, what responsibilities do parents still have?

My Thoughts

Consider why body piercing concerns you. If it is a modesty issue, discuss with your child 1 Peter 3:3-4. If it is a concern about "looking like the world," study together the passage in 1 John 2:15-17. If it is health issues, consider 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. Be sure to express these as concerns, not accusations.

My Part

Plan to sit down with your child and respectfully express your concerns. List ahead of time the issues you have about body piercing, and ask your child to join you in studying what God's Word has to say about these concerns. Don't use this as an opportunity to beat your child with the Bible, but use it as a time to grow together in understanding what Scripture has to say about these topics.
