The moment you become a child of God through faith in Jesus, you belong to the Body of Christ called the Church. However, you'll need to connect or "fellowship" with other believers, and the way to do that is through the local church. But what are the essentials to look for in choosing a church?

What Does God Say?

Look for a gathering of believers committed to growing in the knowledge of God and His Word. A prayer in Colossians 1:9-10 reflects this need: "that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God" (ESV).

It's also important to find a place of fellowship, where there are people who can teach and pray for you and who will encourage you. Romans 12:10, Romans 15:30 and Galatians 6:2 tell us that we're to love one another, pray for each other and help each other. Remember, fellowship is a two-way street where you give to others just as you gain from them.

The church is where we serve using the gifts God gives to benefit the whole Body. 1 Peter 4:10-11 says, "As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God's varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves as one who serves by the strength that God supplies--in order that in everything God may be glorified through Christ Jesus" (ESV).

My Thoughts

Read Ephesians 4:11-16. Draw up two columns; in one column, collect the words or phrases that describe spiritual growth.

Use the other column for steps you might take to "grow up" spiritually. (Include how others may help you.)

Look at the first church in Acts 4:32-35. What might these things look like in a church today? What activities or attitudes reveal this passion for God?

As you look for ways to serve in the Body of Christ, consider Philippians 2:3-7, 14-16. Jot down the attitudes you'll need to serve effectively. Who is your best role model?

My Part

Now you have an idea of what to look for in a church. You need a place to grow, a community of love and mutual help and opportunities to serve.

  • Based on the notes you just made, pick three or four things that stand out to you. What might these things look like in today's church?
  • Tuck this list into your Bible or your wallet, and take it along as you visit churches. It's not the final word on which church you choose, but you'll have a better idea of what you're looking for.

Be patient. It may take time and more than one visit, but ask God to show you where He wants you to fit into His Body, the Church. And when you find the right fit, dive in!
