It's 8:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning, and the house is filled with people getting ready to leave. Are they headed for an early church service? No, they're leaving for a Little League game in a town an hour's drive away.

A few decades ago, Sunday morning was considered off-limits for any activity but church. Today, more and more sporting events are competing with the time once set aside for spiritual training and worship. So, what's a parent to do?

What Does God Say?

Determining our priorities can be challenging, but God's Word can help. Hebrews 10:25 tell us, "Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching" (NIV).

  • What purposes do our "meeting together" serve?
  • How can we accomplish those purposes?
  • How near is Christ's return compared to when these words were first written?
  • If you knew that Christ's return was soon, what would have a higher priority, sports or meeting together for spiritual instruction and worship?
  • What would be most beneficial for your children?

My Thoughts

Before your child becomes involved in a sport, draw up a contract between you and your son or daughter which sets the guidelines that reflect your priorities. Both of you should sign it. Tell the coach from the start when your child can play and when he or she cannot.

My Part

The choices you make for yourself and your children reveal a lot about your priorities. Show your children where your priorities are by choosing that which has eternal value over that which is only temporary.
