Finding a church home where you can grow spiritually and be encouraged in the faith is an essential element in the Christian life. But many new Christians are confused and sometimes even intimidated by the number of denominations and independent churches they have to choose from. You may be wondering, "Why does there have to be so many?"

What Does God Say?

Galatians 5:13-15 tells us, "You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. The entire law is summed up in a single command: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other" (NIV).

  • We have been called to freedom. Draw a picture of what that means to you.
  • Instead of using our freedom to make selfish choices, what are we to do?
  • If we abuse our freedom by being critical and unkind to others, what will happen according to these verses?

My Thoughts

List below three choices you have made in the past month. Do these reflect a spirit of selfishness (to satisfy your personal desires alone) or a spirit of service?

My Part

Think of someone who has used his or her freedom to make choices that are different from yours. Plan to show some special kindness to that person in the next week.

Additional Scripture to read: John 8:36; Galatians 5:1
