Happiness seems to be that commodity that everyone wants. The problem with happiness is that it is not a goal in and of itself. But happiness is a by-product of making the right choices. Choosing to live God's way brings a sense of genuine joy (deep, inner peace) that is not dependent on our circumstances, but on knowing and following God.

What Does God Say?

"Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!" (Philippians 4:4, NKJV).

  • What does this verse teach you about joy?

Read the following verses and list some of the reasons that Christ-followers have for rejoicing:

  • Psalm 5:11
  • Acts 5:41
  • Philippians 1:18
  • Philippians 2:16
  • Psalm 126:6
  • Philippians 3:1

My Thoughts

Why do you think God tells us over and over to rejoice?

Your response might include:

  • rejoicing helps us to stay focused on the greater issues in life so that we don't sweat the small stuff.
  • rejoicing helps us to reflect our faith in our Heavenly Father--that He loves me, and will take care of me and is always with me, no matter what.
  • rejoicing helps us to become joyful. If we wait for the feeling of joy to come, we may be waiting for a long time. If we began to rejoice because of who we are in Christ, the feelings seem to follow the act of rejoicing.

My Part

Keep a piece of paper in your Bible. Every time you read a verse that has to do with rejoicing, write it down and write down your reason for joy. Call this your "Joy/ Happiness in Christ" page. Once you have at least 30 verses, focus on one each day so you can celebrate the joy God has given you.
