Title: Tactics for Temptation
Temptation invades our lives in so many different ways. It can look so good but when we give in, it quickly leads to sin and destruction. So, how do you resist temptation and not fall? What Does God Say?The Bible gives us two strategies for resisting temptation. The first is simple: flee. That's right, run away as quickly and as far as you can; avoid it, turn your back on it. Look at Joseph in Genesis 39; when his boss's wife tempted him sexually, he took off at a run. He didn't reason or sympathize with her, he didn't apologize, make excuses or even try to preach to her--he quickly left. Proverbs 4:14-15 says, "Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of the evil. Avoid it, do not go on it; turn away from it and pass on" (ESV). When you see temptation in your path, change your route; if it surprises you, turn and run. It's not a mark of spiritual maturity to hang around or to show off your strength and "gut it out." In fact, it's foolishness, not wisdom. The second strategy is to be armed with God's Word, to rely on His wisdom and instruction. Jesus did this when Satan tempted Him. Read Matthew 4:1-11 and Luke 4:1-13. For each temptation, Jesus responded with God's own words. This means knowing the Bible, having sections memorized so that you're ready when temptation rears its ugly head. My ThoughtsHave you used these strategies when temptation crosses your path? Take a moment to identify one or two temptations you faced in the last couple of weeks. How did you respond? Did you flee? Would it have made a difference? Fleeing might be as simple as walking away from the office snacks or logging off the Internet. Or it may be a tough decision, like refusing the boss's request for a "favor" even it costs you a promotion. As for using God's Word, remember the Bible is packed with wisdom and instruction to help you resist temptation. Get acquainted with Proverbs. Be sure you use the Word appropriately. If you're tempted to be unfaithful to your wife, don't use "it is not good that the man should be alone" (Genesis 2:18). Instead, turn to Ephesians 5:25-31. Can you think of any Bible verse that may have helped you with your temptations this week? My PartIt takes preparation to successfully deal with temptation. So plan ahead. Name two or three areas where you're most likely to be tempted. Look for Bible passages that help you defend against specific temptations. You may need to use a concordance or an on-line resource. Post them where they'll remind you at the right time (desk, mirror, car, computer, etc). Create a plan of action: an "escape route," factors to change, Bible verses to commit to memory. Consider memorizing a section like Proverbs 2:6-15 or Proverbs 4:13-15 that offers wisdom and guidance. And always go to God in prayer and ask Him to show you how to resist. Additional Scripture to read: Ephesians 5:1-21; 1 Timothy 6:6-12; 2 Timothy 2:22
