Nothing touches the hearts of parents more than the well-being of their child. Parenting is the most difficult and demanding vocation on earth. God knows the heart of a parent. He is a parent Himself, and when we come to faith in Christ, the Bible tells us that we become the children of God. We learn much about ourselves, parenting and a personal relationship with God from Jesus and children.

What Does God Say?

Jesus came to earth so that we could know God as our Heavenly Father. Jesus made sure that we understood the heart of the Heavenly Father for His children.

What do the following verses tell us about God and children?

  • Mark 10:13-14
  • Matthew 18:2-6

Read Luke 15:11-24.

  • Who does the father represent?
  • Who does the son represent?
  • What is the action of the father when he sees his son a long way off?
  • What is the response of the father when the son begins confessing?

My Thoughts

In this last Scripture passage, what was Jesus teaching us about the heart of the Heavenly Father? List several of the characteristics of God's heart that you see displayed in this story.

My Part

Do you have a personal relationship with God as your Heavenly Father? You may know God as the sovereign God of the universe; as the Creator of all things; as the highest power in existence, but do you know Him as a Father?

To become a child of God and part of His forever family, you must acknowledge Jesus Christ as the Son of God who died on the cross to pay for your sins, confess your sins to God and ask for His forgiveness. Then ask Jesus to come into your life and make you a child of God, committing your life to pleasing Christ as best you can all the remaining days of your life.

If you prayed and confessed your sins and asked Jesus to be your Savior and Lord, write out your own prayer of gratitude to God.
