Title: Facing Adversity
Date: Oct 17, 2005
Topic(s): Pain/Suffering
Scripture: James 1:2-4

<  previous date next date  >

During World War II, Hitler's bombers rained destruction upon London. Over 15,000 people lost their lives, and parts of the city were reduced to rubble. Yet when spring came, an amazing thing happened. Beautiful wildflowers, many of them thought extinct, sprang up in the midst of the devastation. Botanists concluded that the seeds had laid dormant under buildings and others structures until the bomb blasts exposed them and gave them the opportunity to germinate.

If God has permitted a bomb to go off in your life, maybe you're wondering why. What's the purpose of all this trouble?

What Does God Say?

James 1:2-4 tells us: "Dear brothers and sisters, whenever trouble comes your way, let it be an opportunity for joy. For when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be strong in character and ready for anything" (NLT).

  • How are we to respond to trouble?
  • What do these troubles do to our faith?
  • According to James, what's the ultimate outcome of these troubles?

My Thoughts

Consider your troubles. Are they the result of things you've done wrong? If so, do what you can to make right what you've done wrong. Then ask God for the grace to bear with the consequences. But if your afflictions are not your own doing, then recognize that God has allowed them to come into your life to shape and mold your character. Rest assured that He is preparing you for whatever might lie ahead.

My Part

Look into the recent past for a problem that has tested your faith. Jot down what that experience has done for your character (has it taught you patience, has it made you more compassionate toward others, etc.). Write out a prayer of thanksgiving to God for the work He is doing in your life.
