Title: More Like Jesus
Date: Oct 19, 2005
Topic(s): Pain/Suffering
Scripture: 1 Peter 2:21-25, Romans 5:3-4, 2 Corinthians 1:4

The other day I saw a bumper sticker that had a grain of truth in it. It said, "Sports do not build character; they reveal it."

So it is in the Christian life. It is the tough times, not the easy times, which build our character and reveal whether we are like Jesus or not. Have you discovered this truth of living for Jesus? God is more interested in our character than in our comfort.

What Does God Say?

"This suffering is all part of what God has called you to. Christ, who suffered for you, is your example. Follow in his steps. He never sinned, and he never deceived anyone. He did not retaliate when he was insulted. When he suffered, he did not threaten to get even. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly. He personally carried away our sins in his own body on the cross so we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. You have been healed by his wounds! Once you were wandering like lost sheep. But now you have turned to your Shepherd, the Guardian of your souls" (1 Peter 2:21-25, NASB).

  • What kind of example did Jesus set for us?
  • Why did Christ die for us and free us from sin?
  • How did God use Christ's suffering for our benefit?

My Thoughts

Read Romans 5:3-4 and 2 Corinthians 1:4. How might God use the tough times in your life?

My Part

Pray that whatever you're facing today will not overwhelm you but will show you the gift that God gives you in adversity--to become more like Jesus and to be used of Him in being a blessing to somebody else.
